I cannot believe that rosé wine can get any finer nor any more captivating than this wine. I have left a half a point off my score in order that owner / winemaker Sacha Lichine and his guru consultant Patrick Leon can one day prove me wrong, but this wine is, as far as i know (because it is inevitably breaking new ground), a perfect creation. The colour alone is exquisite - it seems to have a light filament inside, emitting a coral-coloured glow which manages to illuminate everything in its path. Garrus, made from 80+ year old vines, is a wine which treads an exquisite balancing act between awe-inspiring restraint and elegance and profound depth and unnerving power. There is spectacular density of fruit here coupled with insane length, but it is all done with heart-braking control and finesse. Bottled only 5 weeks before my visit in late August, this is a wine which already knows how to carry itself. It is catwalk-ready and its momentum and cadence are thrilling. The aok is very sexy - I can't think of more ravishing couture carpentry. Jamessuckling.com: "Amazing aromas of earth, mushroom, stone, mineral and slate. Flowers too. Full-bodied and round yet agile and dynamic. Flavors of delicate strawberry, apple, lemon and mineral. Salty. Linear, energetic backbone of acidity. Barrel fermented and aged for almost a year. From mostly old vine Grenache and Rolle. Super structure and impressive finish. This will be even better in 2019 but great now. Greatest rosé ever." Decanter: "Here we get the full contingency of the 80+ year old Grenache vines, with a touch still of Rolle. On the palate is slate, stone, a beautiful finesse and the barest hint of creamy lemon and burnished red fruits that have been deepened by a year of barrel fermentation and ageing. A beautiful salinity on the finish really takes this wine into totally moreish territory. Is the score too high for a Rosé? Not if you are measuring it on the sheer pleasure that it gives." Wine Enthusiast, Roger Voss: "Always aged for a year before it is released, this iconic wine is impressive. It is superrich without losing freshness. Light wood toast, red fruits and balanced acidity meld together in a ripe, spicy whole. The wine could even age for another few months, so drink it this summer or keep until the end of 2019." Food & Wine, Ray Isle: Lichine also makes a top-of-the-line (and quite beautiful) luxury bottling called Garrus, using fruit from 80-year-old vines on his property. Garrus is a Rosé that truly does deserve serious reflection - and at $100 a bottle, it had better. Lichine wants to bring rosé the same respect the great white and red wines of the world receive. That's a worthy goal. Maybe even a noble one. Food & Wine, Steven Spurrier: "Almost silver-rose, an entrancing colour, lovely forality and rose petals on the nose, fine expression of natural weight on the palate, smoothness of texture and great length, deserves to be drunk with a meal, not as an aperitif." Wine Spectator: "This is distinctive, with blood orange, jasmine tea and mango notes that stay elegant and restrained as the creamy, floral-edged finish hangs beautifully. The long stony echo keeps the finish tight, so cellar briefly. Drink now through 2019.
